Yall are looking at this the wrong way.
Mastadon is a bad Twitter replacement. But with a few tweaks, it is a good Discord and Telegram replacement. The inevitable Discord/Telegram monetization squeeze is going to be a huge event for Mastadon.

But many Discord (and some Telegram) admins already self host auxiliary stuff and solicit community donations for funding. TBH they would probably like running their own instance as a hobby.
