I do the same sometimes with either alt-tab switching, and when I need a lot of things open, virtual deskdops. The latter is epecially handy if the apps are complex programs like Photoshop with a bunch of dockable palettes.
I don't get it. You can do the same thing with i3wm if you wanted... even Windows supports this "workflow".
