Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu 23.10 Performance on the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 4

So basically there is a huge difference in performance in many tests. It goes either way but more often Ubuntu comes on top.

I guess a positive spin on this would be that for both OSes there is room for even more software improvements on this great hardware from lenovo/AMD?

I learned how to use Linux in 2003, I'm a developer, but I keep using windows, mainly because some software don't have good enough Linux alternatives: paint.net, foobar2000, avidemux, and some games.

I have to admit that I want to switch because ads in windows is something I cannot accept, and other things.

I really postponed because I was lazy, and because double boot was never perfect.

AMD's Linux GPU driver continues to be superior. On the CPU side of the house I'm not a fan of benchmarks which ignore monitoring power usage but simultaneously don't put the device and scheduler into performance mode.

The "TLDR" version is that Ubuntu 23.10 continues competing very well with Microsoft Windows 11. Even when it comes to the integrated RDNA3 graphics, Ubuntu with its stock graphics driver support was competitive with Windows 11 and AMD's official Windows driver there... In CPU workloads Ubuntu 23.10 is very competitive with Windows 11 on this laptop, with few exceptions. When it comes to creator software like Blender, Linux continues to perform significantly better than Windows 11. Let's look more at the numbers.

Why does Ubuntu almost always perform better on the vec GPU benchmarks but not the scalar benchmarks? Is there a trade off here?

I care less about performance, and more about things like whether sleep works properly, battery life, and if the trackpad works.

No battery life test :(
