I remember playing BB on PC back in the early 90s..
When I had 45-50mins to spare I would rock it.. If memory serves well, if you reached lvl 20 without losing a life you would open up the bonus levels.
I watched a video last night about how the special items are calculated. Blew my mind- I thought it was random.
