There's a Michael Chrichton-like thriller series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child that (so far) mostly has to do with the Museum of Natural History in NYC and other histories of NYC.

I just finished the third book in the series called "The Cabinet of Curiosities", a riff on the same subject.
