Startup Skills in Storytelling: My Transition from Entrepreneur to Author

I have always considered myself an entrepreneur. Like many of you, I have started several projects that eventually became a reality, most with little success but a lot of learning. Ultimately, I have always enjoyed creating. I imagine there is some chemical mechanism that drives me to do it, or it is simply the satisfaction of traversing a difficult path and seeing it completed. Either way, that's how I define myself.

A few years ago, I decided to start writing. I couldn't even describe what pushed me to do it. It just happened one day. And during this time, I have gained some learnings that I would like to share with you.

1. Writing is an Entrepreneurial Adventure

Writing is undertaking in a universe of words. As an entrepreneur, each project is a story of passion and perseverance. In writing novels, I found parallels that, although obvious, were no less surprising.

  - Creation from scratch: Starting from a blank page is an exciting challenge.
  - Perseverance and tenacity: Writing is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires long-term commitment and constant dedication.
  - Facing the fear of failure: Exposing your work to the world, whether it's a product or a book, means opening yourself up to judgment and public feedback.
  - Delivery is only a small part: The adventure of marketing and commercialization begins right after you click “publish”.

2. Writing has brought my work closer to my loved ones

An unexpected advantage of writing has been how it has brought my work closer to my family. My novels have opened a window through which my family can understand and connect with what I do. Talking about my characters and plots has generated deeper and more meaningful conversations than I have ever experienced with my business projects, which has helped me make general decisions or even delve into the essence behind a dialogue. Ultimately, my product has a shared spirit, influenced by the people who love me. Creating is easier with them by my side.

3. Writing has helped me to know myself better

Writing has transformed me more than you might imagine. It has changed my synaptic connections and taught me to appreciate moments of silence and solitude. Now, these moments are opportunities to immerse myself in my creative universe and unleash my imagination. I enjoy it immensely.

4. Writing has improved (Obviously) my written language skills

There is little I can add. The skills acquired through years of writing have been transferred to my business communication. Whether drafting an RFC or articulating a vision, the clarity and fluency acquired in writing have made my communication much more effective.

So, if you have ever considered writing, I encourage you to take that step. I hope that, seeing all the good it has brought to me, you take that step and discover how much there is behind the words I share.
