Stupid. A student was asking, so what's bad about answering this way?

At no point was a student asking for dating advice.

Article says "Shewchuk’s comments were in response to a student who was asking for advice about finding work in the Bay Area and dating in the area"

If the prof wasn't personally asked and butted into someone elses convo, sure then I can see that being not appropriate
