why is an HR team first cut instead of people on the hiring team? how did HR weasel their way into that?

HR should be doing criminal and background checks after the team is ready to hire.

Even though I am not sure I believe the story but in smaller companies, HR, doubles as recruiters and human resource managers.

Companies I've been in recently have HR wedging themselves in the name of "diversity" because apparently everyone else is too biased. It seems like self-serving power grab to me though.

But with non-technical people doing this, the companies get randos put in the pipeline and interviewing process shifts to "gotta prove you're not a faker or idiot", which I cannot stand.
