What about the Apple?

View on HN

They don't support my hardware.

Linux user here.

If my options were Windows or OSX, I would be swallowing copilot.

I'm so damn thankful Linux became a viable option. Switched to Linux fully a couple of years ago, and have been very happy since.

What makes OSX (macOS) such an unviable option?

It is as unfriendly and annoying as Windows, but unlike Windows it also sucks for gaming.

It is a fine alternative for many people, but if hardware tinkering or gaming are concerns it is right out.

Running from the arms of one untrustworthy corporation into another untrustworthy one isn't addressing the issue, that's just pigs, lipsticks, brand, and marketing.

In the grand scheme of things, sometimes one option just doesn't stack up to the other. If that's the case, which one seems to be the underdog?

For gamers, Apple isn't an option.

but linux is?

Most games work, if it isn’t bundled with anti-cheat.

Yes, actually. The (Arch) Linux-based Steam Deck is brilliant for gaming. Much better than any Mac in my household.

Games on linux now regularly get better frame rates than the same games under windoze. https://www.tomshardware.com/software/linux/three-gaming-foc...

If you want to try out games on linux and make it easy, try out Lutris.

Since Valve's Proton and Steam Deck (with companies targeting Steam Deck compatibility) Linux has become a very viable alternative.

Apple with its ARM CPUs and requirement for Metal isn't there really.

The only games I can't play on Linux are mega-modded Skyrim and League of Legends.

I can at least confirm playing mega-modded Oblivion on Linux.

Not sure if 500 mods is "mega", but Skyrim runs fine using wine-staging. Indeed no issues with dx9 for a long time now.

Never tried LoL, but dx12 games like Horizon ZD/FW run well enough with ultra settings for the former, high for the latter.

Gamers typically want to be able to customize their hardware.

Absolutely. Unless you play some crap that relies on anti-cheat malware (and in that case, you might want to re-evaluate your gaming tastes), I have been gaming on Linux without any issues.

Brother some of us have friends who want to play “crap” games with us.

Indeed. I decided after getting fucked by Epic that I wasn't going to invest in any games any more. The whole market leaves a bad taste in my mouth now. Apple was an easy move.

Hat tip to any Linux switchers. I hope you get what you need out of it.

Apple users have at best 3 months left.
