If only the choice had been between cruelly enforcing borders, or humanely enforcing borders, instead of not enforcing borders at all, perhaps this could have been avoided.

The same thing plays out in other countries - "you don't want borders, you just want cruelty!" is only ever said by people who don't want you to have borders either.
