OpenDescent is a peer-to-peer encrypted communication platform - think Discord but with no central servers at all.

I built this because I got fed up with every "encrypted" app still having central servers that can be breached or handed over. No central server means no data to hand over.

Your identity is an Ed25519 keypair, no email or phone number. Messages are encrypted on device with X25519 + AES-256-GCM before they go anywhere. Runs on libp2p with KadDHT, DCUtR hole-punching and circuit relay v2.

Also has Dead Drops - anonymous onion-routed posts that disappear after 24 hours, and community hubs like Discord but decentralised.

And a lot more on the way!

MIT licensed, Windows build is live, Mac and Linux coming. Otherwise clone the repo! Happy to answer anything especially on the architecture.

Just tried this out — really clean and smooth experience. Love how straightforward the file-to-file sharing is without all the usual friction. Definitely feels like a step in the right direction for decentralised apps. Nice work

Impressed with how this handles secure calls and video — everything feels seamless without sacrificing privacy. If this keeps evolving, it’s genuinely looking like real competition for Discord.

AI generated slop with fake comments from new accounts

Admittedly a friend tried to help me by leaving a review/comment but didn’t think twice about using AI to do it! That’s on me.

The project itself is real, I’ve been working on it for a while. It hits at a real concern I’ve had about data privacy and user safety over these last few years. The app is free to use and always will be.
