My preferred Kindle 4 classic also fits in my pockets, used ones are at around 25 EUR and pretty hackable. I could barely imagine reading a book in 3.7", that's half of a smartphone.
Current smartphones. The original iPhone had a 3.5" display and a lower PPI than the x3.
