You pose an interesting theory related to "if star wars was real they would have robots fly all the planes". In that, something our own nostalgia and hubris will ultimately lead us to always mostly demand manned aircraft.
USAF stuck to the "we must use manned aircraft!" mantra for far too long, but even they have conceded now.
