Overhead lights may generally suck, and I can say that I've been grateful to have one every time I've needed it.

Second this. My apartment has wall lights only, except for the kitchen. Very cosy.
For some reason my bedroom overhead switch is near the closet door 10' into the room. I have a remote switch to a wall plug and standing lamp where the normal switch would be.
