I set this up with Frigate (running on my Home Assistant box). The Frigate+ models at least can identify trash bins with a fully local model and expose the count of bins as an entity via the Home Assistant addon. Combine that with the waste_collection_schedule addon the article mentions and a quick automation later I have a notification to my phone on the evening before pickup days if I forget to take them out, and another the following day if I forget to bring them back in.
