Some people, maybe. But Trump already had four years in office, he and his base were known quantities, their beliefs were broadcast all over the media and social media. Almost everyone who voted for him knew exactly what he was about, don't let them tell you otherwise.
You don't defeat your enemies by being softer than them. You win by being harder than them.
Once you have turned crueler than them, you have just made the case for your enemies. And the cycle of violence will keep recurring.
