Not everybody did, and many of the ones that didn’t are still open because they were the ones focused on the long game. Even a small shop just needs one skilled person to retain that knowledge and it doesn’t take a business genius to see that you need to train that person. In the grand scheme of things, having the equivalent of a couple interns is a very minor expense. It was pure shortsightedness.
