How many people carry their laptop around and put it on their kitchen counter when they cook?

How many don't carry their phone?

I don't enjoy figuring out how to stand it up, or having the screen constantly lock. And I don't want to buy accessories or mess with settings to fix this.

Why is an accessory unacceptable but a new device is fine?

Because its a fixture.

Okay, but this is functionally equivalent to, and quite possibly literally the same hardware as, a phone glued to a phone charger.

It has the same core hardware and operating system but is configured quite differently. You can’t get the always on, multiuser face recognition behavior out of an iPad even in kiosk mode.

My phone is gross; I don't want it on the kitchen counter or to touch it when I'm cooking.

It'll be much easier to clean the Homeview's big screen vs trying to clean all of the nooks and crannies on a phone (+case).

And what's wrong with moving a laptop around? They're designed to do that. The keyboard and trackpad give you great tactile control of what you're doing.

They’re not very well designed to be used with dirty and wet hands, and cooking frequently involves both.

Can't you use Siri to have a hands-free mode on an Apple laptop?

They're usually big enough to view the whole recipe, unless you got it from some trash website on the first page of Google

FWIW the tech specs don't mention an ipx rating, so not sure how well this would handle dirty and wet hands either.

Why would anyone do that in the first place is the real question

Just to be clear, I’m not usually using my laptop for this (though I have done before!), but it seemed like a pretty obvious usecase to me.

Rather than turn your old devices into more e-waste, this is also a good reuse case for them, if you haven’t already.

You can... print it? Or write it down on a piece of paper, or better a book, with a pen, like everyone did till phones and computers were invented?

And yet from what I can see on the product page this thing doesn't have video apps on it, and doesn't work as an Airplay video target, so you still end up with a laptop/iPad on the kitchen counter.

Is this really a good solution for cooking though? The grid of holes for the speakers in the main column are going to get clogged with food spatters in no time, and they wouldn't be easy to clean. An iPad I can understand, since you can just wipe it off.
