Did the old one also not have Dolby vision/HDR10/Atmos? What is this cinematic stuff? What are we missing here?
Why would I need CPU/GPU performance on an Apple TV? I'm genuinely confused. Is it to play video games? If I want to play video games, I can pay a bit more and get a used playstation I suppose. I genuinely don't understand this product anymore.
HDR10+ is supported in some players (infuse) but not others (plex) and will fallback to HDR10. Profile 7 DV files do not play properly on Apple TV period even though it will display the DV logo (though frankly very few devices can do this). Profile 5 and 8 DV files will play properly depending on the player and the content mapping level in the content (2.9 is well supported but 4.0 causes HDR10 fallback or black screens in some cases). Apple TV also doesn't support HD audio passthrough great.
The Shield Pro is still the best all-around set-top box streaming device. It was always a bargain at $199 for the overpowered hardware it had under the hood, but after the hardware refresh and size reduction, it was a no-brainer. It was the only box that had a gigabit Ethernet port, which Apple finally put in their new device.
Nvidia will never release another device like it again, because the Shield and Shield Pro were meant as a foothold against Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft consoles. Now that Nvidia can make bajillions selling GPUs for AI, they won't even bother with a new Shield device, or if they do, it will be only marginally better than the current Shield Pro and will land with a total thud.
They're completely uninterested in gaming nowadays and that was their bread and butter until 2022/2023 or so when datacenter revenue finally eclipsed gaming. Now that AI revenue dwarfs everything else, there's no chance we'll see a kickass STB that makes others run in fear. Those days are over.
Not to take away from what you're saying, but I have a 2022 Apple TV 4K with a gigabit ethernet port.
You just had to buy the higher storage model, weirdly.
Model MN893X/A
*I do have a once-per-run Moonlight glitch that may even be because I'm on an older version. The first connection just doesn't pick up on the HDR immediately. I just have to reconnect once and it's good after that.

I thought I surely was imagining it, so I revisited it 6 months or a year later, and, yes, the input latency from the controller is substantially worse on the Apple TV.
I had unacceptable input lag when streaming to my Apple TV 4k, but switching the TV it into "game" mode fixes it entirely. I just need to swap it over to game mode when I hop into Steam Link or Moonlight.
Their Studio Displays have an A19 in them too (A19 Pro for the XDR)
Eg Pixel Brite works great on all versions of AppleTV including FEL playback on 1st gen
The only thing I haven’t been able to do with the older models is upscaling content at the same fidelity levels. But the results are very subtle either way and not all that compelling IMO.
That's crazy
> used playstation
Unfortunately PS5 prices have shot up due to everything else.
Everything. It's like pixel density, going from 96ppi to 220 is just better, and once you first see it, you just start wanting it everywhere. My Mac, iPhone and iPad all have 120Hz at this point, so of course I want to see it in more Apple products - it feels amazing compared to 60. It just does.
