Surely their goal is ever-faster recursive self-improvement.

That by itself doesn't imply need for infinite code. It may just imply the opposite.

Fortunately they realize that code can be deleted in a commit, too.

It looks like they are recursively gradient descending into their own local minima at increasing code velocity.
