How does someone this dumb get hired at openai?

You might want to have a seat first if you want this explained.

Smart people can do dumb things. Their LinkedIn profile looks typical for an OpenAI engineer.

He was a Saudi national, so that is a possibility

If you think about it that’s more likely than any other explanation.

50% is looking and sounding the part, the other 50% is having a good university on your resume / good networking.

Yeah that. After three bad experiences in a row they are no hire status.

There’s plenty of better people out there who just aren’t interested in that sort of stuff.

Probably went to a prestigious university or had connections.

Technical skill and common sense/street smarts are usually inversely related.

It's so bad, it seems fake. He gets a little fine or something, along with a large backchannel payment, all to keep attention off of something else...
