Game of Life – But Multiplayer, Hypermedia and Python

How crazy that I started working on something similar a week ago.

Question, why does clicking on a single tile cause a cross on a 3x3 to be inputted? (results in that star thing that ends with 4 blinkers) Was this a conscious decision? Or just the result of a vibecoding

Trial and error. Single cell was kind of dull and did not really produce enough „chaos”

It'd be nice to have a few different options of 3x3 blocks to lay down. In particular, being able to set up a stream of gliders easily.

What if players could claim a small plot of squares that is frozen in time while you draw your creation. Their changes are visible to all while working on it, and when they unfreeze it, the chaos begins.

This might be the way, yeah. Depends on how "enthusiastic" users are expected to be, I guess.

I can loop into that :) Just got to find some spare time to sit to it. Tomorrow's Friday so maybe instead of deploying to prod at work I'll just add this one :D

Nice. The five-tile paint cursor is an excellent design choice, much easier than the single-tile default you get on apps like Golly etc.

What’s the Hypermedia reference? On mobile your About button is unclickable.

App is written in Stario + datastar (realtime hypermedia) Fairly cool poc of what’s possible and extreamly simple

Just Explaining the controls - you probably figured it out already :P

My browser froze up so fast when I visited your page. Had to restart my machine.

Oh, no! That was not my intention. Any better after restart?

If you can hint at what I should try to fix I’ll look int it

This is a great way to introduce new frameworks or tools (i.e. show what can be done with it).

And by far the best GOL I've seen so far.

Glad you like it! And yes, Stario is amazing so if you can - go check it out;)

I did, and it is indeed!

Great stuff! What's it running on?

It's on Stario (python web framework of my making) Works really well with realtime apps based on Datastar

Or if you asked about a machine - then probably a potato :D

What kind of potato?

some hetzner vm - dont remember what I ended up having

I'm probably leaking some memory here because app is eating memory like crazy:

stario-site-app-1 up 6h 10.17% 347.3MB 495e5c0 ok 7s · 6h

left side must be clean!

If you click on stale cells you remove them :)

very cool!

Thank YOU!

Neat! I implemented something similar (real time playing along with GoL) for desktop:

https://github.com/hbmartin/openrndr-game-of-life

That's a desktop app only, right?
