honestly i'm thinking it might be easier (and cheaper) to launch our own agent from GH webhooks and trigger `/code-review`..

So dbs, seed files, etc, and then just a review prompt and some skills and a few scripts.
It triggers on a new published PR or if tagged @bot-name. It's way better than the other services we've tried (which was admittedly ages ago) because you can get it to work exactly how you want it and it's dead simple.
With Codex, for the time being at least, you can use a subscription, so it's basically free if you're already paying for one. But on API pricing it's still not too bad as it doesn't produce that much output.
I set this all up in about half a day. Codex does 99% of the heavy lifting.
bugbot was costing us $1k per month for a small team. EVEN IF we decide to go with a paid or say something like GPT Sol for our custom harness it'll cost us maybe $100. We've already implemented all of bugbot's interesting features like cross-PR memory.
the cool thing is we can leverage this for things that bugbot cannot do. Just today I added a security-reviewer action reusing almost all of the code that we wrote for the code reviewer.
If an engineer paid $150,000 a year reviews some code manually for about 30 minutes, the cost of their time is about $36.
During my evals on my own 3 agents that review in parallel they are much more cost efficient and cover 75% issues. Even on model like haiku it’s better score than default. Multiple passes or raising effort will cover 90+. And this was tested on large diff, about 3500 LoC changes
It's pretty effective and lets you do nice stuff like compare the code to the tickets, reply to comments and stuff like that.
This generally works for me. I think a solid spec is the key for the models to review against. I ask them to follow the spec, and if the spec doesn't say, follow first principles.
Also, if there is a user experience change, they need to notify me.
How about your pattern?
