I really don't understand how "need to pay for an LLM subscription to be usable" isn't a large indictment of the tool.

It's always been a matter of skill issue. An LLM subscription being necessary or not says more about the user than the tool.

Based on other testimonies here about the flake syntax, I seriously doubt that's the case.

Blurting out skill issue has always been about ego jousting. Making collectively understandable software is something different to that.
