When your country gets worldwide news for atrocities it is committing, leadership in those countries will do anything to change public opinion. (Except stop committing atrocities, I suppose.)

This was absolutely happening before 2016. It might have been unheard of, to you, prior to then. But countries have tried to change the results of US elections since forever.
