But in this case, just listening to them is enough. They're openly calling for violations of our constitution. How much longer do we have to wait before we may take their threats seriously?

If you arrest them, they will quickly stop calling for violations of the constitution, but they won’t stop. Would you rather they act in the open, or with minimal plausible deniability, still recruiting?

The first step, arresting the most obvious, won’t lead to a Reign of Terror on its own. But I don’t think it will be effective either.

We're not talking about arrests, but about banning the party (and successor parties, which is a specific and well-defined legal concept). Since this prevents them from using their established structures and connections, new rightwing parties would have a chance to establish themselves without immediately being taken over by the extreme right again.

The comment at the top of this chain ("If it progresses like it ALWAYS does...") is predicting that CxU will be taken over if AfD is banned.

It predicts that first the CDU will form a coalition with the AfD. If we ban the AfD beforehand, this can't happen.
