I wonder though, do you think the animals care about your integrity or whether your message actually affects change?

Did people stop smoking as soon as they learned it was bad for them or did they stop smoking when it became a social faux pas?

No. It took 30+ years for people to turn it into a faux pas after the science was clear.

I don't agree with the guy necessarily but he's right, this is the type of change you're not gonna slowly convive people to, there needs to be some schock value involved. Also, if you accept his framing, eating meat is akin to genocide not murder. People tend to have strong reactions to that.
