While an approach of associating "notes" with frequencies and singing right with "hitting the frequencies" is what you may naively consider. I think it's more important to get the intervals right, you can take any starting frequency, and as long as you get the intervals right it will sound right, even if the frequency itself isn't perfect. Whereas if you use a frequency based approach like this you will have an absolute frame of reference instead of a relative one

Agreed, but if you're singing to the song, then you'd have to match the vocal pitch of the singer otherwise there would be a clash.

Some other singing apps allow you to transpose the entire song but it's easy for them because they play the music. In OnKey's case, it would have to silence the music from the player then replay it shifted up or down. So this might be possible, I'd have to do some experimentation.

It might be useful to allow just matching the note. E.g., if the singer is singing C5 count the user singing C4 as a match.

OnKey already ignores octaves.
