The conservativism of English spelling is a help: the meaning ornament unfamiliar word can be more easily defined when its roots are still visible rather than when the spelling simply shows how it might be pronounced somewhere.

In my experience this has been a great help in reading French, while spelling reform is a real hindrance when reading German.
