The ones I have looked at all have an AI generated 'real life artifact' which makes them non-real life. Which page where you looking at?

Also someone made a real crossbow based on the image: https://loeffelholz-codex.org/en/codex/f014v.html

(Edited wording to correct for jacquesm's point)

That does not look like it is the owner of the site.

The owner of the site is an SEO consultant in Munich:

And this person is Austrian.

You are right - that's not me. That is Andreas Bichler (an austrian - armbrustbauer.at). He built the crossbow back in 2014. Andreas is a true specialist when it comes to crossbows. Wherever I can, I try to get specialist voices. Andreas very kindly allowed me to showcase and link to his video on loeffelholz-codex.org.

https://loeffelholz-codex.org/en/codex/topics/thumbscrew.htm... seems to have a real sourced photo?

Indeed it is. Not his though, but at least it is credited.

Thanks for pointing to that remarkable piece. Christopher Schwarz has an entire chapter on how he built the Löffelholz workbench (around 2018) in his book Ingenious Mechanicks. Chris is dedicated to uncover lost knowledge - hence the name of the publishing company he founded in 2007: Lost Art Press.
