Lula Wins Brazilian Election

resultados.tse.jus.br

This was the first time I saw a major mainstream media outlet prominently feature a statistical predictive model live during the vote count (and it was spot on): https://www.estadao.com.br/politica/eleicoes/em-tempo-real-p...

The New York Times has "the needle" for major elections.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/11/05/us/elections/...

It is, however... often less spot on.

Thank God. The Amazon gets to borrow a little more time.

I really wish neither would win and both would be barred from running again. But since that won't happen, let's just keep looking for opportunities abroad

Fabio is the son, Jair Bolsonaro is the past president.

Why?

Who would you rather have seen running instead?

Is no one under 80 competent to lead the country?

Asking for a friend...

This is called ageism. I bet Lula has a more jovial and open mind than you do.

Some of us value action over abstraction, and mental fitness more than a particular disposition. Some of us would leave it at "We've heard enough from you".

The entirety of your post are straw men.

We did it! ^^

We did! Congrats!

Congrats Brazil!

Why the flagging?

Once again, a clear anti-Bolsonaro vote from the majority of the electorate. Lula won because he got last-minute support from the moderates and even some right-wingers. It certainly does not feel like a victory of the left.

Now he will face a much bigger opposition in Congress and therefore will have to find a middle ground.

I expect his policies to move even further to the right. This might pave the way for his vice-president Alckmin, a historical right-winger, to run in the 2030 elections — likely against São Paulo’s governor Tarcísio de Freitas, also a right-winger and considered more moderate than the Bolsonaros despite being associated with them.

Why was this flagged? It seems relevant

There've been a half dozen of these popping onto the home page; probably flagged as dupes.

What's his deal with being pro-Putin? Kind of weird unless it's the usual corruption.

Most south americans consider imperialism from the north the major concern today as yesterday and think the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Plus, tankies are a thing.

So how does that make them support imperialist Putin? No logic there unless it's all about corruption as above, which is almost always the case with Putin's puppets.

For some reason Russia retains the anti-imperalist reputation of Soviet propaganda despite both being extremely imperial.

I think it's because neither incarnation could do imperialism via a navy so all the countries not on the Russian periphery never experienced it.

Yeah, soviets were imperialists as bad as they come, and modern Russia isn't any better. One must be really dumb to buy into such propaganda.

Back then may be access to information was harder, but there is no excuse today.

The Russians may be imperialists but lucky for South American countries they rarely leave their neighbourhood and have never visited the western hemisphere.

> What's his deal with being pro-Putin?

Currently looks smart. Brazil’s one security concern is seemingly in Putin’s pocket.

Being in his pocket is never smart. Europe learned it the hard way and still didn't even fully get rid of his gas blackmailing.

He's not pro-Putin.

He wants to sit on both chairs, benefiting from Putin and pretending he is not pro-Putin. It doesn't work that way.

He doesn't. He negotiates with all leaders because he's a statesman. Russia is an important ally of Brazil in many areas, but that never stopped Lula from calling him out over Ukraine.

Having basically a modern Nazi state as an important ally is a huge problem, which is exactly what I'm pointing out. I assume it's based on corruption, which is essentially another way to describe statesmen without values (i.e. he is willing to profit from Putin).

Calling out is just a PR thing, he still has dealings with Putin as you say. I.e. as above, trying to sit on two chairs.

He also does business and have alliances with Trump, whose administration has been actively hostile to Brazil. The world of international politics doesn't exist within the naïve set of rules yours seems to.

Pretty sure this is a yes / no thing. No excuses.

What? LMFAO

Not funny. Change Putin's Russia there to Nazi Germany and re-read what you said. Laughing still?

Change Nazi Germany there to Trump's USA and their strong ties with Netanyahu (and also Putin!) and re-read what you said. Laughing still?

What do you expect to happen? You live in la-la land, little buddy. Lula is a statesman in charge of the largest democracy in Latin America, and one that's just taught the entire world a lesson in democracy.

Retire to your tiny little corner of dream land and quit trolling and shitting on people who are actually trying to make the world a better place rather than spewing out useless ultra-ideological rhetoric with no practical consequences.

You are avoiding the point and sound almost like Putin's propaganda, so it's a waste of time.

You can't excuse sitting on two chairs with "it's politics" anyway. Collaborating with Nazis is collaborating with Nazis. Putin's buddies don't make the world a better place, that's for sure.

I am not avoiding the point. You are not making one in the first place.

No one is saying Putin is great or that he's making the world a better place.

Thank fuck
