Dictionaries, in one form or another, are far older than the 16th century, far older than printing press. Word lists, particularly those translating words from one language to another, have been around for thousands of years. Arabic dictionaries exist from the 8th century. And there were catholic/latin dictionaries (alphabetical word lists) in the 13th century.
