GitHub suspended my account, and I couldn't submit a support ticket

8 pointsmilisp13 comments

I filled email and select the reason (Account locked: My account has been locked or suspended) in https://support.github.com/contact/cannot_sign_in then submit.

A few steps to create a ticket.

After I filled everything then click submit. It show "An unexpected error occurred (status: 401)". So I never created a support ticket.

I think maybe the reason why my account was suspended:

I asked Opus 5.5 (claude code) to ask a few vendors in PRs on my own repo whether they'd offer a perk to users. It looped gh pr comment and posted the same text on 3 PRs within seconds. On the 4th call: "Your account was suspended."

Additional context: The three PRs were submitted by vendors seeking to list their MCP servers in my directory.

repo: milisp/mcp-linker

I guess Everything I login with github maybe lose if I don't use second login method.

Anyone can help?

This triggered a bad memory.

I was working for a large company (name withheld to protect the guilty). Back in that day, everyone had a landline phone in their cube. One day mine wasn't working. But there was a team dedicated to fixing phone problems. All I had to do was submit a service request to them.

That's great, except that the only way to submit a service request was by phone. This was about 2007, so email was definitely a thing. But no, it had to be by phone, and my phone didn't work.

I wound up having to use the phone in someone else's cube to submit the fix request for the phone in my cube.

Can you do that? Can you use someone else's account to submit the request for your account? (Without getting their account locked or suspended?)

1. Sorry for trigger your bad memory

2. I successfully created a ticket in normal(not private) Safari mode without using other people’s accounts. Maybe GitHub cookie issue because private mode.

I don't think anyone here will want to help you if this is what you do. This is not acceptable behavior in the community

You're right. I understand why this was inappropriate, and I won't do it again.

For context, these vendors had submitted PRs to my own directory to list their MCP servers

this reads like ai generated response, which itself breaks the HN rules, which an ai will often do in the immediate response to being told it broke the rules, your comment history shows a pattern of this

stop using ai bots for your writing, be a human

I'm sorry, now I know the comment rule too, Thank you. the post was written by myself, but the comment I learn from AI, not send by bot. I'll write everything by myself next time, Just use google translate.

I won't do it again.

With a suspended account, yes.

Common Ai response when being called out.

Why? It was his own repo.

It still abuses GitHubs notification system for business prospecting or what appears to be something close enough to it

I don't disagree that it's probably a violation of GitHub TOS, but I don't think it's like substantively negative behavior, if that makes sense.

Like if he was spamming other peoples repos programmatically, then, yes, I would agree he should not expect sympathy from the rest of us.

Not gonna die on this hill though; seemed like a pointless and somewhat odd thing for OP to do lol

> but I don't think it's like substantively negative behavior

This is were we disagree, I report anyone who does this. Do not abuse github for marketing. It does not matter if it is your own repo, when you ping other people in it, they still get the notifications.

It's a work platform for developers, not a place to drum up leads for people trying to make a quick buck or as a means to reach out to potential users for whatever reason. This also applies to scraping emails and sending spam to inboxes.

If it continues or gets worse, GitHub will fade. I appreciate their efforts to tame the hype beast and slop peddlers

Update:

I successfully created a ticket in normal Safari mode without using other people’s accounts.

I tried Chrome and Safari private mode (401) failed, so maybe this is a GitHub cookie issue because.

Thank you for your attention.
