Registrars that unconditional comply with malicious takedown orders should be boycotted outright.

“By mid-morning, icepi.cx no longer resolved. Its registrar, CentralNic, had placed the domain on serverHold.”

Especially relevant for the HN audience.

The registry sets serverHold, not the registrar.

I remember reading a blog post or something about VPN providers complying with law enforcement requests. The author said "Those companies can't afford a lawyer. They can't afford a lawyer's _coffee_." I don't know if that's the case here, but I don't expect any network-tech-as-a-service company to put up a fight for anything.

Are there any registrars that are known to not do that?

'Bulletproof' hosting and domain services resist takedowns. Irondns.is comes to mind.

DHS, ICE, CBP, etc. are public employees and cowards, neither of which deserves anonymity. The public deserves to know what feckless people are killing citizens and immigrants and prosecuting the innocent.

Did you end up hearing back on that? Though I'm not super invested in this article specifically I'm a bit curious.

I regularly see interesting stuff that sits well within the tech sphere get flagged off of hn especially during heated times and it can be a bit sad seeing that. I'd love for hn and its community to be better at handling challenging discussions but I know that's a complex thing to try and fix.

Been here for something like 15 years now and it's often a toss up whether we handle sensitive subjects / posts with grace or not. Sometimes we get some great discussions going and sometimes the comment sections are trashfires or it's just flagged to death.

That was a wild ride! It went up so fast in the first hour then stalled out completely once the flagging started.

Yeah, it's bogus. It was literally at #1 but only lasted like 10 minutes before disappearing completely then getting flagged.

I've heard them say that they have COVID-19 and they're trying to "stop the spread". I guess Biden's policies are kind of biting us in the ass now...

COVID policies, including masking, started under Trump not Biden. Trump rather infamously refused to wear a mask because he thought it made him look weak in front of the press.
