Hangikjöt? Look up how it's made, if it's done the proper/traditional way.
I was there 2 years ago (and previously in 2019). I had a realization that maybe 80% of the car traffic are tourists (number pulled out of a volcanic vent) going from one tourist spot to the next. I realized this while sitting in a crossover SUV with 4 empty seats.
The roads into Reykjavik have traffic jams now, probably an oddity for a place of 140k.
That being said we hate it but also like the things it brings, restaurant culture, new products and services. Tourist numbers were down 20% this summer (our high season). China just started direct flights here 3x a week.
It's a mixed bag.
This latest push however is pretty standard for the tourism industry consortium as a whole, the folks who live here never get much say in how we're portrayed, and most of the profits go to a handful of the same companies.
(we're 390k just fyi)
I guess the 20% dive is due to the Trump-Netanyahu oil inflation.
It seems worrying to rely on tourism, places like Bali or Maldives crippled to a halt during Covid, and even Visit Norway is considering the environmental impact of its work. But hey, money!
