From the perspective of a person who is neither a US citizen nor living in the USA: I (and many of my fellow countrymen/countrywomen) will relativize and defend a lot of Trump's tantrums since they give you so much material to laugh about.

It's honestly somewhat refreshing. Politicians are all sociopaths who say all the right things while keeping their true thoughts secret. Trump calls other countries shitholes, and that's actually what he thinks. No doubt it's a diplomatic nightmare but I can't help but muster a small amount of respect for the sheer brazenness of it.

Brazenness is one way to describe it. Another might be a total lack of respect for anyone that doesn't capitulate.

It isn't like "saying it like it is" is actually good, or a morally respectable position. It is just word vomit. Most cynically, it is a political strategy to distract from his real self-interests.
