It strikes me that if it were up to Sam Altman, Eliezer Yudkowsky, Bill Gates and Dario Amodei, this crisis would persist indefinitely. If it were up to them I wouldn't be surprised to see them destroy the GPUs just them to keep them from the plebs.

I picked those names not to be hyperbolic, but because of very specific things I've seen them say.

Let us not forget, once they have all the chips they want, they can just sponsor a politician to start a war with China. Destroy semiconductor manufacturing capacity and they will have monopoly on compute for decades.

In fact I fail to see any other end game where they make profit on the huge liabilities that now have.

Yeah I try not to make predictions but we really are watching some petty maniacal bullshit play out aren't we
