I mean this is quite literally what happened at my current firm. We forged our own path for good reasons, it all sucks, and the firm pays millions of dollars a year in dev salaries to maintain it.

My coworkers are very smart -- smarter than me -- so I'm low confidence anyone else could have done significantly better or avoided the pitfalls we fell into.

I've seen this exact scenario bankrupt firms and cost people smarter (but more arrogant!) than me their jobs. No handyman will ever shit on other people for buying and using tools instead of forging their own hammer. But somehow there's this facade of people on HN with this weird attitude.

Its a matter of practice and measure. If you can build your own hammer in less time than it takes to drive to the store and back then building your own hammer makes complete sense. People irrationally fear not using frameworks for things not measured. If other people want to continue that irrationality, for whatever reason, then so be it.
