A solution to both problems is:
- Filter recommendations to users matching the asker’s personality and other favorites. This works particularly well for bad taste. Marketers can still imitate real users by overwhelming every demographic with accounts that have a small set of genuine recommendations and larger set of hijacked ones, but it requires more accounts.
- Web of trust, letting users explicitly follow others who they know elsewhere and see their followers’ recommendations, and prioritizing for everyone users who are verified real. This does less for taste matching but much more for filtering marketers.
But still as a catalogue of what ppl discuss, it's quite interesting to browse.
The marketers have completely taken over Reddit as of 2015 or so. Probably a couple years before as well. I wouldn't trust opinions from there to be organic at all.
