I was literally about to remove the wifi/bluetooth module today on my C5 48 after reading about that in an HN comment a couple of weeks ago. I'll definitely be looking at this before I do that.

(It has never connected to wifi nor done any firmware updates, just my AppleTV and MacBook via HDMI. So I don't actually need to root it but I like the idea anyway.)

FYI, OP is wrong about "pulling the wireless module and voiding your warranty."

In the U.S., merely doing something like that will not void your warranty due to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Companies will lie and claim that, but in my experience, they immediately backpedal when you ask for that in writing (or if it was already in writing, thanking them for admitting to breaking the law).
