Not mentioning Peter Watts here is criminal, because he came unnervingly close to nailing it. The voice of Rorschach in Blindsight is very similar to early LLMs. And, well, hopefully the dead internet of Starfish doesn't turn out to be a prophecy but I'm getting nervous.

Not just the voice, but the underlying process. Rorschach passively absorbed decades of human broadcasts and built up a language model that was eerily fluent despite literally not understanding what it was saying. The conversation with the "head cheese" neural network in Starfish hits a lot of the same notes (and even features a great example of misalignment that threatens humanity).

Crazy he wrote these in the 2000s.
