Help HN: Student wants to learn

Hi guys,

My fiance has a student in her class who wants to learn about coding, and web development (including design). He's very poor so can't afford to pay for anything so is on the hunt for some good info that is on the web. He's a bit overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff on the web, and doesn't know what is good vs what is bad.

He's been turned down by his college to study web development (long story) and wants to learn himself on the side.

Any good resources that would be good for him to start?

thanks!
