Ask HN: Why are http and https URLs not getting merged?

Example: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8794685 and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8796591

This question was asked 4 years ago (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2217516) and as https is getting more common, I think it would be nice feature if those submissions would get merged.
