2devnull··on EU data regulator bans personalised advertising on Facebook and Instagram
If I buy a magazine, I’m opting in. I don’t opt-in to digital stalking. I’ve made every effort to express my non-consent. “They say no, but really they mean yes.” No. No means no.
2devnull··on Yann LeCun: AI one-percenters seizing power forever is real doomsday scenario
The laws are coming no matter what, not because of lobbying or whatever, the laws/policy response is coming because politicians want to get in on the ai too. The regulations we will do things like mandate ai be used for equity purposes in the real estate market. I think that’s in Biden’s plan. I mean, I’m sure these tech ceo 1% want regulatory capture, and they’ll get it as a quid pro quo for allowing ai to be used for largely partisan goals. But we shouldn’t fear open source ai, or regulations against it, we should fear the ai being weapon used by the political parties. It to some extent already is.

Sort of, but not exactly. More like quitting it doesn’t change me back to prior me. I will just be current me but without the addiction. I’ll still long for her just the same. Once you start drinking it black, you never go back.

For some people, the effects of caffeine seem to be permanent. I am one.

“90% of his patients are not consistent with CPAP usage”

That’s high. Surely someone can post scientific evidence that cpap helps with sleep despite the fact there’s almost 100% non-compliance.

2devnull··on Improving deep sleep may prevent dementia, study finds
Naps are terrible sleep hygiene. Any deviation from a regular set sleep schedule is bad hygiene. Better to get less sleep than to nap and disturb the sleep schedule. Many people develop insomnia this way, especially shift workers.

That’s what I don’t get and would love someone to post full text of the study. They claim this is a “modifiable” risk. I find that claim dubious and would love to see how they support that, and why this isn’t simply descriptive/correlational.
2devnull··on Return To Office is all about power
Those with money can live close by. It’s the worker bees with less options and resources that will by necessity have the longest commutes. But who are they to disrespect tasteful interior design choices, and “snacks”.
2devnull··on Executive Order on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence
If militaries are not subject to the regulation then it is meaningless. Who else would be building weapons systems?
2devnull··on Randolph Bourne
I’m willing to entertain that claim if you would be willing to point to one or two examples and define “broadening views”. From the data I’ve seen, violent crime is associated with urban areas. I think of the places where one might encounter the most broad set of worldviews (airports, subways, dense low income metropolitan areas with a mix of ethnic backgrounds) none of them seem increasingly unified in any meaningful sense of the word unified. We now treat citizens the same way we treat enemies, by spying on them, because some may be terrorists. That was the original justification at least. I don’t see much evidence of our “broadening views unites us”. Look at our universities for increasingly violent mob behavior where once there was a culture of debate (give or take the occasional fire poker incident). Increasingly there is focus on one’s identity group, as a means of self-distinction (ironically) and need for community.

Is that what we’re experiencing?

Do you know it was pseudoephedrine?

I remember you could buy bottles of mini-thins at the pos of pretty much every liquor store in the country in the late 90s/early 00s. Used to be sold in bottles of 100 for like 5 bucks.

2devnull··on Psychedelic Mushrooms Hit the Market in Oregon
No, I’m just saying that for me personally, if I wanted advice about taking psychiatric medication, I would prefer a clinicians view over the view of a epidemiological researcher, _even if they have the exact same level of training as medical doctors_. I don’t know about the researchers in question, maybe they too are practitioners. If they are, you should qualify that they aren’t merely epidemiologists. Epidemiology as a field has a problem with replication not unlike psychology or nutrition research.
2devnull··on Psychedelic Mushrooms Hit the Market in Oregon
And I would add, the world is more peaceful and loving and moral under Christian morals (the morals we all currently share) than under the ethics of the Roman Empire. Christians ended the slave trade for specifically, uniquely Christian reasons. It was a religious issue. Modern progressives grew out of the Protestant culture of puritan founders. It’s why we embraced immigration.

It’s one thing to be ignorant of the creator (and deny creations miraculous nature), but to be ignorant of world history; please read about Rome.

That’s a really long response for something you feel is trivially silly. Maybe it’s cognitive dissonance?
2devnull··on Psychedelic Mushrooms Hit the Market in Oregon
Yes, God may have created psychedelics for a reason, but why not cut out the middleman and just “go to the source.” What many in AA learn, the higher power is the only way. Everything else is a treadmill.

“psychiatric epidemiologist“

I was with you up to this. What even is a “psychiatric epidemiologist” I had to look it up,

“It is a subfield of the more general epidemiology. It has roots in sociological studies of the early 20th century. However, while sociological exposures are still widely studied in psychiatric epidemiology, the field has since expanded to the study of a wide area of environmental risk factors, such as major life events,“

Yeah, I don’t know, I’d sort of go with an experienced clinician when it comes to advice about pills. Sociology/epidemiology is cool, but there’s a lot to say for the importance of “practice” in medicine.

2devnull··on I live in my car: Parking lots open for those who can afford a car but not rent
The real estate market is driven by speculation no? So that has to be solved before building more is ever going to be a useful option. Otherwise we just pour gas on the fire of real estate speculation by expanding the size of the bubble. Building supply without any restriction in demand just scales the problem up linearly in proportion to the money put into new development.
2devnull··on Children of married parents do better, but America is moving the other way
You are agreeing in a weird way. Yes, in America if you live somewhere that other people want to live, then you have to move or take on two incomes. That was my point, that because US real estate has become an attractive investment over the past decades and the growth and current size foreign capital outweighs the average American family’s purchasing power which results in: people resort to two incomes, wait to start families, have fewer children when they do have children, etc…

“How do you think the wealthy got wealthy”

Most inherit it. Then lose it. That’s the typical path of wealth. Rarely, it’s amassed by someone who starts with little. Here these people, the ones who create rather than squander wealth, are called “selfish” often by the wealth squanderers, the children of abundance.

Do you live in an area with high international demand for housing?

Not all of the US is a hot spot for high paid immigrants, yet. Displacement is a real thing. Not everyone can change states or nations to make the finances work out.

2devnull··on Adblock Plus and (a little) more
Get rid of _some_ of them for now

It only has to be relatively less ad laden than the free version. Whenever ads get cranked up on the “free” normal person YouTube, they’ll get cranked up on sucker pay-pig YouTube in direct proportion. If anything, they have less concern about the small fraction who (amazingly) pay them for what they’re doing.

“Although if you chat with MD’s about this topic, diagnosing mental health is hard so that isn’t a silver bullet either.”

What are they going to give people a quick blood test for depression? “This person has depression today, they can stay home.” Neither you nor the parent understand what the term “mental health” means. You don’t catch stress or anxiety or schizophrenia like you catch a cold. It can only ever be self-reported because that’s what it is, by definition. If there were an underlying physical condition it would be reclassified as “health” rather than “mental health” as we do for autism, stroke victims, those with brain injuries, basically any mental health problem that can be reliably diagnosed by an MD ceases to be “mental health”

2devnull··on "No, it's less effort than that"
But it’s easy working for such people once you identify them. They are “goes to 11” people. Like that amp in spinal tap you just make your regular output max level be a 9, then you have room to go 1 more when they want you to. Of course that means working slower than you otherwise would. But if they want a dev that “goes to 11” it’s pretty obvious to some of us that there’s only one way that works.
