3riverdev··on Apple’s flagship Chicago retail store wasn’t designed to handle snow
Downtown Chicago is completely full of "watch for falling snow/ice" signs all winter. Not a problem unique to this building...
3riverdev··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
(Bias: I'm one of the Hibernate ORM committers.)

Hibernate (and presumably any ORM) was never intended to be a complete abstraction of anything-SQL. Like others have mentioned here, an understanding of SQL must be had before using an ORM. The ORM is one piece to the puzzle, not a shield to prevent you from having to touch SQL.

One pattern I typically use is a take on CQRS: Hibernate for writing/updating/fetching/deleting a single instance of deeply-relational object model, SQL (I like jOOQ) for larger-scale fetches and any bulk actions.

Shameless plug for a write-up I put together last year: https://www.3riverdev.com/hibernate-orm-jooq-hikaricp-transa...

Great catch! It looks like Liberty has been taken over by a different organization. It used to be a simple "respect everyone, regardless of backgrounds" group...
3riverdev··on SMBC on Healthcare for Small Business Owners
One suggestion: there are several fantastic medical cost sharing plans that end up being exponentially cheaper than traditional insurance. We use Samaritan Ministries and have had nothing but great experiences. Full coverage for most needs, no network restrictions, etc, all for $500/month for our family of four. Samaritan is a religious org, but there are others that are not, https://www.libertyhealthshare.org being the most notable.

3riverdev··on Ask HN: When do you sell your stock grants?
It's typically best to sell immediately, unless the stock has a fairly historic pattern and is currently oversold. Instead of looking at the the grant as part of your investment portfolio, simply treat it as a cash bonus...

3riverdev··on Any good open-source self-hosted evernote alternatives?
One option that wasn't originally intended for this use, but works really well, is Artificer (http://artificer.jboss.org). It's an open source project that started out as a metadata and software artifact repository. However, it's expanded to include any type of logical information. It supports hierarchical classifiers, custom/ad-hoc properties, relationships between nodes, etc. I'm in the middle of working it into a demo that implements the "Getting Things Done" structure.

It's self-hosted on Wildfly or JBoss EAP, but we're almost finished supporting Docker (ie, you'd be able to run it on OpenShift).

Disclaimer: I'm the technical lead for the project.

3riverdev··on Ask HN: Favorite methods to block spam in your apps?
Thanks Steve, looks interesting. What exactly is its approach? Is it different from the alternatives (Akismet, etc)?

Feel free to take a peek at any of the new projects listed on http://www.theprobono.org. The project descriptions tend to be really similar to blog comment spam, so it shouldn't really be any different contextually.

3riverdev··on Show HN: Marketplace for programmers that have contributed to open source
One other point of frustration was that it appeared to find only contributions within my and other user accounts, but not organization accounts. For instance, my (and others') forks of Hibernate ORM was picked up, but not the original within the Hibernate organization.
3riverdev··on Show HN: Marketplace for programmers that have contributed to open source
BIG kudos for open sourcing your code with a usable license. This sounds like an interesting project!

One nitpick: I signed up for a programmer account and, when I was originally presented the "add your details" page, I'm 90% sure that a save button wasn't visible at the bottom. I had to hit enter when focused on a text field. The Edit button is there, though.

3riverdev··on Ask HN: Getting paid to work on open source full-time?
Red Hatter here. If you want to work full-time on engineering within an open source project, the easiest way to get noticed by a commercial backer is making many quality contributions to the project. If we need to hire additional engineers, we'll typically ask some of the community developers first, prior to recruiting publicly.

That being said, there are many opportunities to work on the projects, albeit a little less "directly". Companies like Red Hat have large teams dedicated to QA, support, etc. Most of them are actively involved in contributing bug fixes, test cases, and directly working with customers. These types of positions do not usually require as much direct experience with the project as the engineering teams do.

And as one commenter already pointed out, we're definitely hiring! http://jobs.redhat.com/

3riverdev··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (November 2013)
You keep 100% of your income, but employers do set a nominal amount of credits (usually $1-3) per bid on their projects. This is really beneficial for both parties. If you've ever used other freelance marketplaces, you'll know that it's difficult to get noticed when you drown in a sea of bids. And usually, the freelancers never even read the project description. The bid fee ensures that freelancers are serious and qualified for the job, reducing spam and making you much more noticeable.

3riverdev··on Show HN: Attempting to connect volunteer professionals with awesome non-profits
Lots of great sites exist to provide volunteer opportunities (VolunteerSmart, Catchafire, etc.), but they include:

- really big organizations and really big service firms

- a wide breadth of opportunities, including grunt labor, etc.

- heavy mediation and forced processes

- large project scopes

The Pro Bono attempts to narrow its focus to connecting non-profits needing assistance on concise, "one-off" projects with remote (or local) professional volunteers.

Would love feedback!
