If you view advertising as subversive and dishonest, then yes, advertising to smart people is less effective.

Not all advertising is dishonest, and instead informative. Hopefully the new media technologies will let this type of advertising thrive.

Taking the "wet" look to a new level. I like it.
8plot··on My Dad Asks HN: Should I Build A Hackerspace?
Since hardware hacking is in some ways similar to making (and practicing) music, perhaps the shared band spaces where many bands group together to share practice space, equipment and recording studios would be a good model to start from.

8plot··on Own up HN: What are your craziest abandoned projects?
The problem I want to solve isn't unique to me, and the cat bowl is easy enough to hide from ants (it sits on a plate of shallow water).

I simply hate the idea of chemical warfare to combat ants.

8plot··on Sotomayor Issues Challenge to a Century of Corporate Law
Or put under government control, and profits go to the people for the length of the sentence.
8plot··on Own up HN: What are your craziest abandoned projects?
A mechanical ant trap/killer to be the only "conventional weapon" for my war on ants.

I attract a line of ants to eat the bait (in my case, cat food), then periodically suck (or blow) ants into an un-escapable garbage bag, but only a few at a time to keep the line of ants stable. (or until the entire colony is exhausted)

Compared to the traditional poison method, it is much more satisfying for me to dispose of a garbage bags full of ants which I might make good use of. The mass of corpses could be good fertilizer, or bird feed.

8plot··on Ask HN: Are you a founder?
Yes, I am the founder of http://StoryMash.com
8plot··on Ask HN: Recommend a domain-name registrar..
moniker.com is my favorite.
8plot··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I'm working on revolutionizing the fiction publishing industry.

Amazing technology when you think about it. Sure it's clunky now, and material is limited and expensive, but it wont be long before we can print copies of the machine itself.

It's really going to be fun watching physical product manufactures complain when we start printing pirated copies of our favorite toys.

8plot··on Miguel De Icaza: Microsoft promises to never sue anyone regarding Mono.
This is strange:

"Q: What if I don’t implement the entire specification? Will I still get the protections under the CP? A: The CP applies only if the implementation conforms fully to required portions of the specification. Partial implementations are not covered."

8plot··on Ask HN: Review my startup
Great job on the implementation!

I think I get the concept as it's something I have thougt about for years.

My first and only minor gripe is the name; it isn't memorable.

8plot··on Google Wave: Our First Hands-On Impressions
You might be right, but I think it's wrong to dismiss it just because it's hard to explain. Sometimes great new technologies are difficult because there is less to compare it to.
8plot··on Ask HN: Can iPhone applications be used on iPod touch?
Yes, I believe what you have heard is true. Ipod touch is like the iphone without the phone.
8plot··on Hemlock: multi-user, real-time web applications
Is there an equivalent technology that doesn't use flash?
8plot··on Ask HN: What comes after we hit the 16nm barrier?
I mostly agree with you, but I don't think an increase in cpu size will slow the pace down much; it will just shift the cpu load to the server side.
8plot··on Ask HN: Startup founders, would you walk us through a day in the life?
I have a 25 hour work day.

Does "0 * /25 * * *" work?

About the HN and reddit problem, I found it helpful to add this to my /etc/hosts file to prevent the timesuck: 127.0.0.1 reddit.com www.reddit.com news.ycombinator.com

Of course I comment it out during weekends, and permitted "play time".

8plot··on US Energy Secretary: paint roofs white to fight global warming
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there more energy used to heat buildings than cool them? Of course it depends on many factors, including location; so a blanket statement of "white roofs everywhere" seems wrong.
8plot··on Apple never promised us it wouldn't be Evil
I disagree, as an end user I had to return my first iphone in frustration. The potential was obvious, but the draconian rules meant I couldn't do what I needed with the hardware I owned.

Now that the jailbreaking community is thriving, I bought another iphone, and I'm more than happy with the progress of efforts like cydia.

8plot··on Apple never promised us it wouldn't be Evil
I intend to, but not in protest. I will still develop for the iphone, and if my apps are rejected, there is always cydia.
8plot··on Apple never promised us it wouldn't be Evil
It surprises me that they are so successful, despite their draconian rules, fanboism thrives.
8plot··on Scribd Invites Writers to Upload Work and Name Their Price
For fiction, http://StoryMash.com is doing exactly this. Writers earn over 50% for their collaborative content. Today it all comes from advertising, but when the first great internet novel is re-published, the participating authors will see a real payoff.

I too have been thinking about this same phenomenon, and I believe some day (soon), BCI + exoskeleton/ artificial wings will give us the true ability to fly like birds.

8plot··on What Do You Believe But Cannot Prove?
I too have been pondering this and I think the field is lacking the concept of artificial _imagination_. Maybe intelligence = knowledge + imagination, and since we already have massive artificial knowledge (wikipedia for example), AI is just missing the imagination to comprehend all this data.
