Thanks for pointing out the floats issue. It'll probably be OK because I round to the nearest integer when displaying and only use the extra precision for sorting, but I might round to 2dp on the server side to avoid wasting bandwidth on all those zeroes - I presume floating point imprecision compresses poorly.
I submitted it a few hours ago to two upvotes - I think it might be because I didn't include the link directly, and apparently that downranks it in the algorithm. I've emailed dang to see if it's OK to repost it.
I suppose I'm living up to the username! I do know how to write decent programs and in other languages, but I'm just so much faster when bodging.
I'm thinking of making similar website for more things, in which case I'd clean up the architecture a bit, but my exams are in a few months and this hasn't been particularly successful so we'll see. I probably shouldn't be spending my weekends programming right now :)
I'm just trying to not let it get in the way of appreciating the world. I'm planning to travel to mainland Europe sometime next year (gap year). SpaceX has reignited spaceflight, and there's so much cool stuff going on in that space. Science marches on, with a steady stream of interesting discoveries.
And programming is great - for now. It feels slightly strange spending a week writing a project that may be finished with a single prompt in a few year's time, but it's enjoyable.
Maybe I'm overreacting? I've grown up in a pretty calm period, with the west in a clearly dominant position. Maybe this is, paradoxically, a return to normality?
On the plus side, Tineye can be quite helpful for finding things in their original size.
And I only use 1080p!
Could any somewhat-plausible technologies (fusion etc) get us to that point? I don't know how to do relatavistic maths, but it seems that directly converting mass to energy and ignoring relatavistic effects requires 50 000kg to accelerate 100 000 kg (with a constant relationship, as the C^2 cancels out) to the speed of light.
When and where was this? Perhaps they have changed over time.
