AndroidKitKat··on Wasavi – Vi editor for any webpage
When I'm using Safari I've found myself using Vimari: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/vimari/id1480933944?mt=12

It's also available on GitHub if you're not interested in the Mac App Store: https://github.com/televator-apps/vimari

It works pretty well, but I've strayed away from using Vim & Vim bindings for everything after getting into using Emacs on my Linux box at work.

AndroidKitKat··on Ask HN: What's on your home server?
I pretty much update things manually when I think of it (usually every ~2 months or so) or when I am downloading a new version for whatever reason (like to flash yet another computer I picked up). I've been looking for something to do in my downtime , so I might see if I can whip something up to automate updates, could be a fun project.
AndroidKitKat··on Ask HN: What's on your home server?
I've got a slew of different computers doing different things. All of them are networked together via Tailscale.

Ubuntu 22.04 Server for the host, everything else runs in LXC containers. This is all setup on ZFS.

- https://znc.in/ IRC bouncer

- https://caddyserver.com/ Caddy Webserver for a few personal websites

- https://github.com/AndroidKitKat/waifupaste.moe/ My personal pastebin

- https://transmissionbt.com/ Torrent client that I actually use for Linux ISOs. Primarily seed different versions of Ubuntu and the latest Arch. I am looking to seed other, lesser-seeded distros, too.

- It also runs Samba

A second, dedicated computer also running Ubuntu Server 22.04. It only runs https://pleroma.social for me and a few of my friends.

A third computer, this time an M1 Mac Mini that is my Plex box. It's running the latest version of macOS Ventura and runs all the *arrs and qBittorrent. It also runs Plex itself, because it's one of the only computers that I found that was low power enough but still supported hardware transcoding in Plex. I've been meaning to find a replacement for it running Linux + an AMD GPU (I have an rx470 sitting around somewhere), but no real good deals have turned up.

AndroidKitKat··on Meta Quest Pro – Bad AR Passthrough
Dang, are there really no other HL:A quality games for VR? I picked a Valve Index and have been playing through Alyx an hour or so at a time and each time I think to myself "I never want this game to end." I've been trying to find some games to play after it but haven't really found any.

I've installed the HL2 VR mod and played that a few times, but without teleporting movement I got sick quiet easily. I saw another commenter saying you have to acclimate yourself to that, so I suppose I will try that in between sessions of Alyx.

Here's to hoping someone makes something as polished and as beautiful as HL:A

AndroidKitKat··on The Age of PageRank Is Over
I think it's just because I prefer the organization of the information, giving you things like the type chart up front and center.

It's also the site I used more as a kid so there's probably some loyalty bias.

AndroidKitKat··on The Age of PageRank Is Over
My favorite feature is being able to boost a certain domain up in the the results (or even pin it if you really would like). I often search for different Pokemon and prefer the information that a site like Serebii.net gives me over something like Bulbapedia.
AndroidKitKat··on TomTom’s new mapping platform and ecosystem
It learns other patterns, too (which is kinda creepy). On Thursdays, I like to swing past a local taco shop on my way home after work and when I plug my phone into CarPlay, it prompts me navigation to the taco shop; it doesn't do this on any other day.

Kinda a neat feature, but it makes you wonder what else it is learning.

AndroidKitKat··on Find your Twitter friends on Mastodon
Mine found the 2 people I'd already followed on Mastodon. Maybe one day more people will be on it, but if not, it's not that big of a deal.
AndroidKitKat··on macOS 13 Ventura review
Thank heavens someone else noticed that Preview lost its ability to open PostScript. I occasionally use Preview to render manpages as PDF so I can print them out and using the Ventura beta made me think it was just a bug. It's a shame that it is missing in the final release -- I even filed several Feedback reports with basically no response. I am not sure at all what utility there is in removing features from Preview.

My current workaround is to use my 2013 Mac Pro that's stuck on Monterey to do so, but eventually that's going to kick the can...

AndroidKitKat··on I help seniors with technology issues
If a process or service is using systemd to start and stop it (e.g. You start it with `systemctl start $SERVICE_NAME), I often do `systemctl status $SERVICE_NAME` to get the service-specific logs. For me, it seems to get the job done much better than journalctl.
AndroidKitKat··on Linux M1 GPU driver passes 99% of the dEQP-GLES2 compliance tests
Sibling comment, but this has links to Apple documentation: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33290808

And this seems to be able to get it running: https://github.com/diddledani/macOS-Linux-VM-with-Rosetta

I haven't tested this because I'm at work, but I'll verify it when I get home!

AndroidKitKat··on The Commander X16 has finally arrived [video]
For those without context, the Command X16 is a passion project by The 8-Bit Guy to build a modernized Commodore 8-bit computer.

AndroidKitKat··on YouTube experiment makes 4K videos a Premium-exclusive feature
One thing I'm curious about is what % of users upload 4K content vs what % of users consume 4K content. I imagine that it is not an insignificant amount of people.

Either way, with this and the unskippable ad fiasco over the past weeks, YouTube appears to really be milking this cash cow.

AndroidKitKat··on EU Passes Law to Switch iPhone to USB-C by End of 2024
I read the law and perhaps I misunderstood it, but I'm curious if there is a grey area with regards to pogo pin like connectors, seen as the MagSafe connectors on Apple's MacBooks or the ones on the back of modern iPads / the ones on the side of my old Galaxy Nexus.

Do those count as wired or wireless charging? To me, that's the only tricky part. My bet is that it would count as "wired" (and thus be illegal in the EU).

My knee-jerk reaction to the law in general is "but why...", but after reading more and the comments in this thread, I think this is a major win.

AndroidKitKat··on A look at search engines with their own indexes (2021)
It's interesting you ask that, because the now-paid Kagi Search has a feature like this called Lenses: https://blog.kagi.com/kagi-features#:~:text=and%20Google.-,L...

I've found them somewhat helpful in getting rid of some of the garbage that pops up when I'm searching for a specific topic. But often, I find myself leaving them off since I sometimes want all the results on anything even slightly related because it might be useful.

AndroidKitKat··on Early Access to Chrome OS Flex: The Upgrade PCs and Macs
Unfortunately, no. If they made that available I'd probably switch full time to Flex from Ubuntu.
AndroidKitKat··on I love the Linux desktop, but that doesn't mean I don't see its problems
I think most comparisons between Linux distros comes down to defaults/the way it operates out of the box. Sure, both Ubuntu 22.04 and Fedora 36 use GNOME 42 (is that the version they're on nowaday?), but Ubuntu has a drastically different UX (dock on the side, panel-applets, accent color & custom theme, the list goes on) compared to Fedora. Additionally, as an NVIDIA user, I like how easy and simple it is to install the NVIDIA drivers while still maintaining secure boot (something Fedora has neglected / informed their users to 'just disable secure boot').
AndroidKitKat··on Kagi search and Orion browser enter public beta
I would really love to use Kagi, but the only thing holding me back is being able to type in my query from the Safari url/omni/mega/awesome/whatever-it-is-called bar. There are hacks to redirect search engines to Kagi but that adds extra waiting time and from my experience removes the ability to fallback to a different search engine. I know that this behavior is one that Apple forbids changes to and that I could get around this by using Orion or a different browser, but I use the Safari Tab Groups feature frequently which AFAIK, Orion does not have.

I did use both products in their closed beta forms, and I genuinely enjoyed using them, but inertia kept me on Apple's browser. Great to see the positivity in the thread!

Edit: it seems they've fixed my gripes with Kagi search in Safari since the last time I used it! Just paid for premium!

AndroidKitKat··on Bringing the Framework Laptop to more of the world
It would at least offer the option to a curious consumer who wouldn't otherwise feel comfortable installing it themselves.
AndroidKitKat··on Dad takes down town's internet by mistake to get his kids offline
I know you're being downvoted, but when I was young, my parents were able to turn off mobile data between set hours through our carrier (Verizon Wireless). It might have required paid parental controls, but I don't think so.

They claimed it was to make sure the phones didn't chew through our small datacaps at night in case things went down, but it had the effect you were looking for.

AndroidKitKat··on Ten Years of ThinkPadding
I bought a Framework laptop hoping to get macOS running on it, and it "works." Other users on the Framework Community forums and myself have found that you can get macOS booting, but all the things one might expect to have from a laptop just don't work [0][1].

Primarily, graphics acceleration doesn't work. Since Apple has never made a computer that uses Intel 11th Gen CPUs, the integrated graphics are borked. I suppose a tremendous effort to reverse engineer and inject a working driver /could/ work, it's probably not feasible.

AndroidKitKat··on Learn Elisp the Hard Way (2011)
I think if I were to start over learning Emacs (I only really started using it about 6 months ago), I would have decided to choose a distro only for package discovery. I haven't found myself really pining for new functionality, but perhaps I am completely oblivious to things I'm missing. I've only really added magit to Emacs since I hated working with git on the command line.

I still imagine I would have found myself just finding what packages I like and adding them to a "pure" Emacs, since I've done that for the other tools I use on a day-to-day basis.

AndroidKitKat··on Learn Elisp the Hard Way (2011)
I wanted to use an Emacs distribution, but ended up against them as I've always preferred to just use the tool barebones and add on functionality when I need it. Maybe I'll dedicate some time to trying out Doom or Spacemacs and see if I am really missing anything that I haven't cobbled together from reading the built-in documentation and snippets of lisp.
AndroidKitKat··on Vim Galore: everything you need to know about Vim
I write C++ and Python for $DAYJOB and I use Emacs with no extra configuration (plugins, evil mode, etc). Out of the box it takes a while to understand its flow (the emacs tutor is excellent), but it's quite usable and nice.
AndroidKitKat··on Open-Sourcing our Firmware
Debian seems to indicate otherwise: https://wiki.debian.org/SecureBoot
AndroidKitKat··on The Windows 11 taskbar is an annoying step backward
I had this same issue, but the only way I have found is to use something like Explorer Patcher [0], but it "solves" the problem by just replace the Win11 bar with the one from Win10

AndroidKitKat··on Hello Mac OS X Tiger
Disclaimer, I'm only a wannabe Apple platform developer, but the GUI-driven workflow is still the predominate way to develop for Apple platforms. The most radical change is the introduction of SwiftUI, which has you writing interfaces entirely with code, rather than using drag-n-drop components with Storyboards.
AndroidKitKat··on Why Galesburg has no money
I don't live there anymore, but it so weird to see my hometown on the front page of Hacker News. Some of my friends still live there and it is depressing to hear them talk about what's going on. When I have gone back and visited, nothing seems to be the same anymore, save for the few restaurants I liked.
