Amazing post and they’re not trying to sell you anything, just appreciating other work. What is it about true expertise that is so intriguing? I have so many questions after reading this.
I think what OP means (and I would be inclined to agree) is that companies will take significant cuts to productivity in order to feel more secure and informed of the progress, even if that feeling is not grounded in data.
sans-humans, maybe. But we /are/ causing the Holocene extinction, which is essentially defined by the last two centuries of accelerated biodiversity loss. Climate change will only further stress already fundamentally strained ecosystems. It’s happening right now, at all of our literal doorsteps.
It’s not about the lack of ice, dingus. the danger is in climate change shocking ecosystems such that they trigger a systemic collapse that we can’t contain or manage. there’s basically no timeline where food supply wont be impacted and I’d like to hear your cavalier attitude about climate change then.
> For one, the spacecraft (or the empty capsules) could have been pre-contaminated before their launch.
I had a really interesting discussion with someone who oversaw decontamination protocols and preparations for various satellites, including the JWST. The protocols they use to prep satellites for these types of missions are beyond stringent, and the chemicals they use are exotic as all hell.
All this to say, contamination is absolutely possible, but there is so much insane behind the scenes work to control for it that it shouldn’t be thought of as something they might “just forget” or casually missed.
Go even has a mantra for this: “accept interfaces, return concrete types”. In the example, I would think to design it such that Oil is just an interface with adapters for either user specified oilType or oilInventory or whatever.
I fully agree. The hybrid option rules for flexibility but I miss an office environment where engineering was seen as a collective interpersonal effort. In person felt effective and useful. Sometimes wfh feels like being put in the corner with a ticket to work on and a presentation due date and that can be depressing no matter how fun the problem is to work on, imho.
Measuring and understanding that risk is the craft. This is like asking how musicians know that their music will move someone when they write the notes down on paper.
I feel like yard work induces a similar amount of calmness in me. I love a good walk but I get the same feeling of centeredness and grounded mental state from mowing the lawn that I do from an equivalent length walk
Absolutely. Pseudo-science, snake oil, and sales pitches all with the promise of a pretty dashboard for an engineering manager who hasn’t written code in a decade to judge me by. Honestly, if there’s one thing that will get me to leave this career I love, it’ll be developer productivity metrics.
Oh this is interesting! Thanks for sharing. To be clear: it’s not that I think it would necessarily degrade the quality of the training, but that the biases of training on other AI output need to be taken into account.
LLMs and other learning models have likely already been trained on AI output. These self reinforcing feedback loops are going to have to be accounted for at some point in AI development.
What are you saying? This was actually a meteor, that actually hit the ground, and there is no hysteria I can see in this news article. It’s purely objective.
The minimalism of necessity that previous years had can’t be imitated. Of course, one can intentionally limit their art now, but it’s not the same. That minimalism necessitates creativity.
My guess would be they’re not slow, they probably just waited to release this info publicly until it was prudent or didn’t have the potential to damage their case. Since he’s in hiding now it seems like that’s precisely why they’re going public, to smoke them out.
I’ve been using Fly.io’s default Go template lately since it has binary embeds by default and doesn’t incur any build system. I can’t explain how liberating it is to use vanilla JavaScript and CSS without any additional build process to develop a webapp. My entire deployment cycle is just building a go binary and pushing it. I can’t imagine going back. Even using Vue or React is just as easy as including a CDN or bundling a minified source with the binary.
Seriously tho, cool idea. I’m also shocked that leaded gas is still the norm. These LS engines (I’m guessing by the shape of the headers and the hint that it’s an aluminum block) are insanely reliable and I would put my life behind one of those before a lot of other engines. I’ve beat my own into the ground several times now.
