Can you expand a bit on what you mean by "PTSD from frameworks"?
CodeCube··on The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro (1852)
You reference those things as if they are a "bad thing" ... they are not universally "bad things". They are merely individual actions/tools/incentives to right historical wrongs. It's not wrong for people to want to right those wrongs, even if someone else feels that other actions would be more efficient at righting those wrongs ... that's a valid discussion to have, not summarily dismissing people proposing solutions.
CodeCube··on Ask HN: How do you organise and discover your team's internal scripts?
I can't believe no one here (currently) has mentioned this ... but IMO in an ideal world, the issue of too many utility scripts means that "your system" (whatever that means to you) is lacking. This leads to users/administrators needing to find ways around the system to get what they need.

The (idealistic) answer, is that when a given script finds more than a few users, or even gets used more than a handful of times ... it should be incorporated into, and formalized, in the system. Make an admin panel/portal/dashboard, put a UI in front of the script for any variables, and make it so that this function doesn't require cryptic institutional knowledge to execute.

I think this one sentence from that article gives a strong clue:

"Activists are arrested for fighting the practice."

Everyone is always quick these days (at least, here in the US) to decry "Social Justice Warriors" as if they are a bad thing ... but for many across the world and across history, they were the saving grace; someone who dared ask, "why are we doing this?"

CodeCube··on Twitter Will Show Who Pays for Ads and How Much They Spend
I want to be optimistic about this ... but it's not like people particular care who is feeding them this stuff. They will complain about shadow government fake news in one breath, while at the same time sharing loads of drivel from `UberPatriotEagleGuns News`, or to be fair, `SocialistOther96PercentDemocratHose`
CodeCube··on Twitter Will Show Who Pays for Ads and How Much They Spend
Yeah, as a consumer, this sentiment isn't gonna get any sympathy from me ... I already despise being "marketed to", which has made me really jaded about content marketing; particularly when I consume it but only realize it's just shilling some product or service after the fact.

All advertising should be (by law, or at least industry standard) clearly marked and disclosed.

CodeCube··on Instagram Is Estimated to Be Worth More Than $100B
Honestly, I see this as part of an _accelerating_ trend. I don't think it's going to change, and is only going to become more pronounced.
CodeCube··on Instagram Is Estimated to Be Worth More Than $100B
I keep hearing (anecdotally, of course), that people are starting to prefer Instagram because long form discussions are more difficult there. They seem to be seeking an escape from the news.

Fair point about the event planning ... if FB were to cross-launch the sane event planning DB on instagram and whatsapp, I suspect that would be pretty much a killer app.

My rule for tipping is:

- someone takes my order, and busses my table: "full tip" (whatever that means to you)

- I stand in line to place the order, but someone busses my table: "50% tip"

- I stand in line to place the order, then bus my own table: "Look in the mirror, and shoot myself some finger guns"

It's funny you mention this, I'm 37 and just visited Las Vegas for the first time recently ... as a Floridian, I never fathomed that air could be _that dry_.

CodeCube··on A New Accent Is Developing in Southwest Kansas
fwiw, I grew up in Miami, and I 100% thought that me and my friends did not have an accent of any kind whatsoever ... because for whatever reason, there weren't really a lot of people born and raised in miami in popular media (at least that I was aware of, days before Pitbull, etc).

Well, I moved away to central florida (very different demographics) at 17 ... and it wasn't until a few years later when I went back to visit, that I realized just how distinct (to my ears at least) my friends sounded. Nowadays, I can hear someone start to speak, and within a few minutes of listening can tell that they were raised in Miami. It's a few subtle clues that thus far have almost always been right

CodeCube··on The Ornithologist the Internet Called a Murderer
I remember being so optimistic, exactly as you're describing ... ~20 years ago. Search engines, the nascent days of the blog community (rss!); open standards for chat (jabber/xmpp!), microformats for distributed social networks (foaf!). It was all so great, so empowering, so exciting.

It was all a lie ... all those wonderful things were like chewing Coca leaves, holding great promise and benefits. But everything that came after: centralized social media, one dominant search engine, closed chat networks, centralized media ... it was akin to turning the coca leaves into cocaine. It felt amazing to see such growth, like fire. But ultimately, the sickness and addiction set in, and we see actors exploiting people using these tools. "We" are sick now, and need to figure out a way to regain our agency.

Just because you don't find the casual/small stuff to be a problem, doesn't mean it's not a problem. Your line will be different than others, you said it yourself with your comment on the variation ... why discount those who find that it has been problematic?
CodeCube··on If the Robots Come for Our Jobs, What Should the Government Do?
On a long enough timescale (assuming we don't nuke ourselves, or we choke on smog, first) ... total and all-encompassing globalization is the end-state. At that point, it will be no different than employers in the US moving from one state to another. Of course, that doesn't bode well considering we have problems even just in the US with some states having booming economies, and others having massively lagging economies ... but that's how it's gonna be

CodeCube··on If the Robots Come for Our Jobs, What Should the Government Do?
This is the reality ... it's happening. Industry will always optimize, and as technology marches forward, they will replace human workers with technology when it makes financial sense to do so.

The discussion should be, "what do we do when that happens"?

CodeCube··on If the Robots Come for Our Jobs, What Should the Government Do?
Strictly speaking, you're "right" ... however, it belies an incredibly inhumane approach to life. Although I concede that reality doesn't always reflect intention, _my intention_ for government is to provide services and protections for all of us; every citizen.

While yes, that shouldn't mean one is necessarily entitled to anything, I want my tax funds going towards helping people who have unforeseen things happen to them. If they lose a job, or get sick, or their head-of-household/primary income passes away, or they are the victim of abuse ... I want my funds to help those people.

CodeCube··on Seattle Poised to Repeal Tax on Amazon and Large Employers
Sure they do ... they (ostensibly) go to paying for the infrastructure that supports that workplace: the roads and mass transit that leads from the worker's home to the workplace, the police and fire brigade that protect's the workplace's capital investments, etc.

That's not to say that tax funds are always perfectly allocated ... of course they're not. But they're not worthless either.

CodeCube··on Overtaxed Working Memory Knocks the Brain Out of Sync: Study

CodeCube··on Ask HN: Pros and cons of working at a startup in 2018?
This is such a massive point right here ... there is so much talent, either already in "far flung" parts of the country; or currently in a place like SF, but who long to move "back home" for any number of reasons.

Having startups be more remote-friendly by default would be a huge boon for everyone involved.
